Naturally, I was excited to check out YU-GI-OH! LEGACY OF THE DUELIST: LINK EVOLUTIONfor the Nintendo Switch as it had been quite some time since I dusted off my Duel Disk.

It was a transition into a more complex trading card game and its excellent cartoon and manga was the gateway drug that made plenty of kids believe in the вЂњheart of the cards.вЂќ I had lost interest by the time that the main series had ended and spin-offs like GX and 5DвЂ™s had begun airing, but the series played an important role in my childhood. And while Duel Links is great, it's a mobile game at heart.Yu-Gi-Oh! became popular at the perfect time in my adolescence right after people stopped trading and playing Pokemon cards and before the nerdiest students got into Magic the Gathering. Even Tag Force Special felt like an empty cash crab, which was probably due to low budget. It saddens me that we haven't had a good Yugioh game in 10 years. There is no way to justify this (other than budget, laziness and no respect for the IP), when games from more than 10 years ago like Tag Force 3 were better in every aspect, but the card pool (because it's 12 years old at this point) and online play. I was disappointed when the game was first released as Millennium Duels and I'm still disappointed today. I know this more of rant than a critique, but I think all these points are valid and they really annoy me. I guess the only I can excuse is the lack of voice acting, because they would have to record lines for most DM, Zexal, Arc V and Vrains characters, but literally anything else could have been done with a bit effort. The monsters have no on field animations, which even Duel Links does. I mean I was able to add all these characters and create decks for them into Tag Force Special by porting the textures from Tag Force 3 in like a day. They have no excuses, because they've just ported the character sprites from Tag Force to begin with and all those characters are available there. Judai from Season 4, Sho's Obelisk Blue Outfit, Trueman, Yusuke, Haou, Hell Kaiser, Amon, etc. You can't even use different artworks of your favorite cards.ДЄnd there are several important missing characters.

You can't disable the Banlist for private matches. You can't choose the format you're playing in, which makes the GX and 5DS completely unplayable, because they have no Link monster and are therefor restricted to using a single Extra Deck monster. The game lacks so many features that were available at the time of its release. Even the improved animations look worse than a mobile game. The same can be said about the animations. Heck Yugi, Marik and Kaiba even have multiples of their God's which does completely against their own story. Say what you will about the anime/Manga decks they at least had some variety. They just looked which cards a duelist used during a duel, inserted 3 copies of the card into the deck and filled it with cards like 'Pot of Greed' to make it flow faster. The story decks are also boring and completely unbalanced. It's just a cheap retelling of the original story. There is no character creation or roaming, all things a lot of older games had. The Gameplay is slow and sluggish, compared to older games such as Tag Force. It's so poorly made for a video game of modern times and bad business practices.Дuel Links is constantly updated, so I don't see why a main console game couldn't be.Д«ut that's not what's the problem with the game. Why make this game at all if they aren't going to continue monitoring it or updating it? They just released it and that was the end of it. And if I do want to battle someone sometimes I get kicked from their lobby. The player base is shallow and only a handful of people are on it at any given time. There's no paid DLC so they aren't making any further money after someone purchases their game. It's just a copy paste of the original Legacy of the Duelist with Link monsters but the cards they have are already outdated. This whole game seems like a wasted investment on Konami's part. But with no updates I'm in the dark on formats and modern strategies. I wanted to build some decks and test them and then eventually make an irl deck and play it at locals if it did well in the game. It's discouraging when you can't even play with new released cards and stay up to date on what's going on in the game. I wanted to build decks with the modern cards and test them out like any other simulator. I wanted to play this game as an alternative to online simulators since I have no other way of playing. I don't even think it ever did get any updates. The banlist doesn't even match real life. I had high hopes that the game would be updated with modern cards regularly but it's so lackluster and so far behind. I bought the game as soon as it released for the Switch in 2019.
